I mentioned last week that my husband brought some DVDs we had ordered back from Zambia. We really couldn’t have had better timing with those. I hate putting the kids in front of the TV but I’ve been battling with the flu this week and having some new shows to watch has given me some much needed down time.
Literacy and Language Arts:
We continued with our Webbing Into Literacy Rhyme a Week Lessons. This week was “Flour of England” and here we are matching our rhyming pages with riddles. We print out a new set of rhyming pages each week, they are pictures that describe a word (this week all of our words rhymed with Spain) and then I read out the printable riddle rhymes and the girls have to find the picture that completes the riddle from their rhyming pages.
Cognitive Skills and Math:
We made our first chart this week which linked science to math as we talked about living and nonliving things. The girls loved using the white board markers and making their mark on the chart after deciding if the object had the corresponding characteristic or not. This idea came from Bright Hub Education.
Science and Nature Studies:
We took some nature walks and talked about whether the items we came across were living or nonliving.
Play:
Our new yoga DVD was a big hit, Playful Planet’s Storyland Yoga. Boo especially loves this and has been asking for it constantly. Kooks joins in and then loses interest but then joins in again. I love that it has a very strong conservation message and that it is teaching the girls real yoga poses in a fun way. The only problem is they don’t like sharing my yoga mat so I think we will be asking Santa to bring them each their own this Christmas. We have also been spending a lot of time in our little splash pool. It is getting hot here!
Thoughts:
We didn’t accomplish too much this week and my no TV except for weekends rule went completely out the window but we still managed to learn a few things. I’m hoping I don’t pass whatever bug I’ve got to the girls and that we have a healthier week ahead.

That yoga DVD sounds great! I hope you’re feeling better, and that the rest of the family doesn’t get your bug!
My four-year-old woke up with the first stomach bug of the season for us. I’m hoping the rest of the family doesn’t get it…
Sorry you have been sick. Glad you had a chance to veg and watch TV.
The yoga sounds nice.
