Enjoying Chipironi: Winter Rain Showers

I love this time of year in Malawi. It is our winter and we typically have cold nights and cold mornings with bright warm afternoons. It is perfect sleeping weather and I love having to pull on a cozy sweatshirt in the morning and evening. It reminds me of fall in Pennsylvania which has always been a favorite of mine.

The rains are over so we don’t have to worry about laundry not drying for days and getting that damp smell that seems to permeate everything during the rainy season – at least not until chipironi. Chipironi is a winter rain that will come unexpectedly during the dry months and it came this week. We’ve just had two days of on and off chipironi rains and it’s really the only time that the entire day feels cool. Somehow because I know it will be fleeting and soon enough we will be into the hundred plus degree heat of October, I enjoy it even more and apparently the littles agree. They rushed outside with cups to collect the rain.

Kooks enjoyed a drink.

Boo painted the walls with rainwater.

It may come again in July, but then again, we might not have another rain until November. Once the unbearable heat of September and October are upon us, we won’t even be able to remember what cold enough to need socks feels like. It was so nice to enjoy the rain even though this particular chipironi brought cloudy skies that unfortunately made us miss viewing the venus transit this morning.

  1. Painting with water is so much fun – and even better when it’s rain water!

You are so wise to embrace the weather of the moment!

  2. We love water painting too! Now that our summer is upon us we’ll be getting plenty of rain. I should keep impromptu rain painting parties in my head.

p.s. Did you get a chance to see the Venus transit? We booked a small beach house so we could follow it across the sun as it dipped into the horizon. Sounded dreamy; but all we got was a thick blanket of clouds. :(

I am so glad to have found you (via a Mama Smiles comment you left).

I’ll need to take a look around your site a bit more to find out who you are, and why you’re in Africa, but I couldn’t wait to tell you that this post in particular flooded me with memories, smells, and smiles. See, I spent 3 months in Cameroon Africa back in 1990. It was a wonderful time, and yet difficult. It was rainy season, so I understand your comment about how the smell permeates everything.

Kudos for you and the stuff you are doing with your kids.

    Darci
