Learning About African Lions and Preparing for Their Arrival

Learning About Lions

The lions are coming, the lions are coming, the lions are coming! We took a break from homeschool this week to focus on lions. We have four lions arriving from South Africa on Monday. Two males and two females that will make up our starter population. To say we are excited is an understatement. There haven’t been lions seen in this reserve since the 1980s, but the project has restored their habitat to make sure there is plenty for these predators to eat and all the final preparations for their arrival are being made. The holding area (called a boma) is finished, this is a 250 square meter fenced enclosure where the lions will be held for their first three to four weeks so that [...] Read more »

Preschool Homeschool Lesson Plans: Week 11, Age 3

Literacy, Age 3, Week 11

We made some strides in rhyming this week which have me very excited! Next week we are going to take a break from our normal schedule to focus on the lion reintroduction. We are so excited about their upcoming arrival. Literacy and Language Arts: This week we learned “I Saw a Ship A-Sailing” from Webbing Into Literacy. We did the recommended activities and when it was time to act out the rhyme we built a little ship out of a cardboard box. We were inspired by the beautiful box ship featured on Nurture Store. That ship was made by an older child and had a tissue paper sail as well as a lot more detail. For our sail we used a sturdy stick and some [...] Read more »

Preschool Homeschool Lesson Plans: Week 10, Age 3

Play, Age 3, Week 10

This week the littles ran hot and cold, one day asking for school and the next showing no interest whatsoever. I’m trying to follow their lead with that. I keep reminding myself that they are young and that the most important goal of homeschooling this year is to keep it fun and never force. Literacy and Language Arts: We returned to our lowercase letter crafts this week with c for caterpillar from No Time For Flashcards. I think the girls missed doing them because they were so excited when I pulled out the supplies. We also continued with our nursery rhymes from Webbing Into Literacy. I’m finding out that teaching rhyming is quite a thing. I thought that since my girls are naturally drawn towards [...] Read more »

Time for Another Cleanse: A Diet to Get Rid of Candida Yeast

It’s happened again: so many birthdays, so much cake, too much coffee, and too much overindulgence. I’m in a slump. The fuzzy head came back, the sluggishness and lack of energy returned and on top of that I’m irritable and have gained just enough weight that my waist bands are starting to feel too tight. It would have been best to stick to an all natural real food diet in the first place but since I didn’t it is definitely time to eliminate sugar and refined carbohydrates and kick this candida out of my body again. Last week I cut out coffee with added sugar – my two big nemeses. I love coffee but I know that I come to rely on it very quickly. [...] Read more »

Preschool Homeschool Lesson Plans: Week 9, Age 3

Literacy & Language Arts, Age 3, Week 9

The girls and I did a lot of playing while learning this week. Friday was Malawi’s independence day and we went to town. Boo and Kooks caught a glimpse of the president while she and her cavalcade drove by. Literacy and Language Arts: Our nursery rhyme this week was Jack be Nimble and this is the first week that I’ve really spent any time looking at the activities suggested by Webbing Into Literacy. I wish I’d read them earlier. They have a lot of great ideas for teaching what rhyming is. This week we played a game where the girls had their backs to me and I had three different instruments (a xylophone, castanets, and a jingle stick). I played two sounds at a time [...] Read more »

Preschool Homeschool Lesson Plans: Week 8, Age 3

Cognitive Skills and Math, Age 3, Week 8

Kooks turned two this week. We had our safari party last weekend so on Thursday we just had a small family celebration. Our homeschool was very low key this week but it was a lot of fun. Literacy and Language Arts: We learned Jack Sprat and started talking about rhyming. I’ve been pointing out rhyming words whenever we come across them. We also played this cute Noisy Letter Jump Phonics Game from The Imagination Tree. I wrote chalk letters on the deck and the girls said their sounds as they jumped on them or I would say the letter sound and they would find the letter to jump on. Cognitive Skills and Math: Kooks received these number puzzles for her birthday and Boo and I [...] Read more »
